G20 Summit

Wednesday, April 1, 2009

President Obama and Britain’s Prime Minister Gordon Brown today, held a joint press conference after meeting for about two hours this morning, the day before the G-20 summit. Arriving Monday with First Lady Michelle Obama, the President is hoping to find solutions to the world economic crisis. The G-20, consisting of the top 20 economies will take place in London. This is the second year of the summit dubbed “The London Summit 2009”, the first was last year in Washington D.C.

The G-20, also known as the Group of Twenty Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors consist of 20 economies: 19 of the world largest economies and the European Union. It is established to bring together important industrialized and developing economies to discuss key issues involving the global economy. So, what does that mean? Well it means, all leaders are going to sit around a table and go back an forth on what should be done; so each already developed country can come up with ideas to generate more money . I ask myself, when they are all sitting together talking about how they need to pay for bailouts and wars and big car companies, are they are even thinking about the suffering that is happening in Africa or Indonesia? Or even how the under-developed countries are not getting any better and their governments are repressing their people, while the government grows richer, but the country itself get poor and its people are suffering. The summit is supposedly seen as positive. As both Obama and Brown today stated that a positive outcome will be reached and all countries (developed countries) who are struggling will find a solution to help stop the world economic crisis.

The G-20 summit will take place tomorrow April 2nd in London. Its members (Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, South Korea, Turkey, the United Kingdom and the United States of America, and also the European Union) will meet to hopefully lay a foundation to move beyond this global crisis and established a recovery plan.
Good Luck!
