It Happened Today: JFK Elected President

"The New Frontier"

I always felt I belonged in the 50's or 60's. I adored the Jackie Kennedy sense of conservative fashion and that state of mind, where a woman was letting her voice be heard.  I appreciated that politics and world leaders were about doing something and rallying the new generation for the better.  I believe that the days of RFK's speeches were masterful--full of hope and reality, that his words would resonate with you for days to come. I believe in that time, that men and women were about paving the way for their children and their children's children--it was about unity and family.

It was a time of making a country realized that "it is not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for you country." Those word came from a man, who's time was cut too short, from a man who had a new direction, in which he wanted to take this country, it was from a man, simply known as "JFK".

On Nov. 8, 1960, John F. Kennedy was elected president of the U.S., defeating Richard Nixon in one of the closest elections of the 20th century.

Today LIFE.com released never before seen photos of the 35th President of The United States-- John F. Kennedy, who served from 1961 until his assassination in 1963. The Massachusetts's native served in both the House of Representatives and the U.S Senate before his presidency.

He was the second-youngest President (after Theodore Roosevelt), the first President born in the 20th century, and the youngest elected to the office, at the age of 43.
"He was an engaging, youthful dynamism -- that so captured the imagination of millions across the country. As Kennedy and his team ran a heady, propulsive campaign unlike any America had seen."
