Does the first lady of one of the most powerful countries in the world get paid? Well I am sure you already know the answer and it is no. But should they?
Every four or eights years a new woman takes the ranks of standing by her man, doing all that is needed to make his administration look good. Some even go far as stepping out of that shadow and establishing themselves, but they do not get paid.
Our new first lady is an Ivey league graduate, makes six figures and now she will be making nothing. She is a well established woman who didn’t stand in the shadow of her husband; remember she was her husband’s boss when he first started in his career. No first lady has ever gotten paid and most of them step out and do things on their own. Jackie Kennedy won an Emmy for her tour of the White House, Helen Taft attended cabinet meetings, Nancy Regan had the “Just say no” campaign, and then there was the woman who redefined it for every single one to come: Hillary Clinton. Mrs. Clinton campaigned for health care, traveling the world meeting with dignitaries, she was the star that came out of that administration. She paved the way for first ladies to come, but she too never got paid. They say their pay is in the perks, the big house, first class plane rides, parties, and extravagant vacations. Hillary had over 500 events a year, visited 82 foreign countries and in the end still wanted to serve office, running for a senate seat.
The current first lady Laura Bush says the first lady shouldn’t get paid, since they are not holding a public office and they were not elected. But I guess that is easy for her to say considering if you match her last eight years to Hillary’s, then yes she doesn’t deserve to get paid.
The first lady is not about the China patterns or White house tours or the holiday parties anymore, they are much more than that, becoming stars in their own right.
