On 27 November 1895, Alfred Nobel signed his last will and testament, giving the largest share of his fortune to a series of prizes, the Nobel Prizes. As described in Nobel's will, one part was dedicated to "the person who shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses".
In 2009 The Noble Peace Prize was awarded to President Barack Obama (9 months into his presidential term)
The five-member Norwegian Nobel Committee – four of whom spoke to The Associated Press, said awarding Obama the peace prize could be seen as an early vote of confidence intended to build global support for the policies of his young administration.
"Some people say – and I understand it – 'Isn't it premature? Too early?' Well, I'd say then that it could be too late to respond three years from now," Thorbjoern Jagland, chairman of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, told the AP. "It is now that we have the opportunity to respond – all of us."
That's great here's more comments from some regular voting citizens:
"It sucks as much as this bossy girl I once went with that I sent packing and she chased me"--David Quintana
"The Presidents wins awards???? That's kinda weird/strange right?"--Darell Levon
"He doesn't deserve it!"--Richard Khan
"I disagree"--Sergio Duarte
"What did he do??? What"--Greg Johnston
"This is a Joke."--Anthony J. Atala
"Gandhi never won the Nobel Peace Prize....enough said"--Arturo Armand
"I think it is a huge win for America! If the international community respects our President, why why can't ALL Americans???"--Cedric McMinn
"Confused where is came from and didn't realize he initiated peace anywhere. I'm behind him entirely just don't see Peace anywhere, maybe someday." Mike Lubitz
"I support Obama, but I'm not so sure if a President should get a prize for doing his job, but at the same time he has taken a huge step towards peace especially involving nuclear weapons."--Mike Greci
"It is God's will for him to get this award whether you agree or not....Just let him shine, he's a good man and he will bring change."--Marco Giron
"I would choose President Obama all over again."--Abel Joanem-Joasil
"I would have chosen the Afghan woman's rights activist, just because that would bring more attention to that problem (like Muhammad Yusuf brought attention to micro loaning). On the other hand, he's one of the few nominees that could actually have an impact on larger scale world issues, so yeah... who knows." --Alex Ramos
"Cannot believe that the Nobel peace prize committee actually admitted that their selection was based on his pre-election rhetoric...." --Ricardo Nova
"The only thing more ironic than Obama winning the Nobel Peace Prize...is the fact that the award is named for the inventor of dynamite." --Tommy Jardon
"I take it as the committee gave Obama the award based on his potential to make these things happen. Isn't that like giving the 2007 NE Patriots the Superbowl trophy based on their ability to go undefeated in the regular season, but yet they lost the big game? I'm not doubting his ability to do these things, but other winners won the award based on what they did, not what they had the potential to do. This award just puts more pressure on an already high pressure job. " Edwyn Sylvain
It seems that not many people agreed with this award. But it happened and there is nothing to be done. But here is too you Mr. President you are stuck in a sticky situation...all decisions need to be peaceful, so God forbid the U.S gets attacked again and you have to go to war....That won't be peaceful, now would it?
