December 1st is World AIDS Day and it is the 30th anniversay of AIDS. This year's theme is "Getting to Zero." That's zero new HIV infections, zero discrimination and zero AIDS-related deaths. For those living with the disease, that's their mission, all year round.

Nelson Mandela Turns 93!!

“Take Action; Inspire Change; Make Every Day a Mandela Day"

It is known to the worlds as "Nelson Mandela International Day", or in South Africa, simply--"Mandela Day".  It is on this day the world's most influential, beloved man celebrates his birthday and this year he turned 93 years old. The world, hailing the man whose fight against the apartheid regime, his imprisonment and subsequent rise to power as South Africa’s first democratically elected president captivated hearts and minds around the globe. Mandela Day is an outreach event which hopes to encourage South Africans to spend 67 minutes making a difference in the lives of those less fortunate than themselves and it has been a global event as of late.

It is exceptionally hard for me to wrap my head around Syria’s sad revolutionary symbol, as it was back in 2009 in Iran. I live in a country where I am afforded the right to vote, make my voice heard and just maybe I’ll see some sort of change. I exercise that right every couple of years since I was 18 and it troubles me that there are some folks who can careless about who runs this county, state, city or town, what gets cut or what doesn’t. I can say with no reservations, that a lot of Americans born or naturalized take that right for granted.

I talk about this “right” because in parts of the world, there is no such right, as we can see with the Arab Spring. Those people are fighting tooth and nail for the right to be able to vote in a fair election, get their voices heard and make the country better for the next generation to come, but with that good fight, there comes a price—one that is beyond my imagination for any human being.

A day of intense protest through out Egypt has caused military forces on the streets ordered by President Hosni Mubarak. The leader, who the Egyptians people want out, has also ordered a nation wide overnight curfew.

The World's Newest Nation on the Rise?

When most of the world thinks of "Sudan" they think of genocide and millions and millions displaced. They remember the images of war and hunger and of hope for some Sudanese who  knew a day like today may be on the rise. It is not official, but Southern Sudan is on the first day of voting in a week-long independence referendum that may create the world's newest nation, about five years after the end of a civil war.

HAITI: A Year Later

More than 230,000 were killed and 1 million left homeless when a 7.0 quake struck Haiti last January. I am positive when I say most of the world's heart went out to the small island and it's people. Images, pleads and cries for help are still embedded in much of our minds and although the world may have moved on and sadly forgotten about Haiti, there are still thousands and thousands of Haitians who pray  that their tragedy on that January day has not been forgotten by the world.
