 Today is Nelson Mandela International Day or in South Africa, simply--"Mandela Day". It is on this day the world's most influential and beloved man celebrates his birthday and this year he turns 94 years old. The world, hailing the man who  fought against the apartheid regime, his imprisonment and subsequent rise to power as South Africa’s first democratically elected president .

Mandela Day is an outreach event which hopes to encourage South Africans to spend 67 minutes making a difference in the lives of those less fortunate than themselves and it has been a global event as of late.

The F Word...

I just recently took part in a 24 hour hunger strike with a cause I helped co-found, called Project MAD with a colleague of mine. Our mission is to make people aware of what is going on in the Horn of Africa and other parts of the world. We raised half of our goal, but we are still going and finding other ways to help them. What's going on in the Horn of Africa right now is not something we should take lightly and think it will go away, because it won't and we need to all step up and help get the word out and raise money for those children who don't make it to their 2nd birthday. The famine in Somalia has killed 30,000 children in 3 months. Yes, Thirty Thousand in Three Months.

The World's Newest Nation on the Rise?

When most of the world thinks of "Sudan" they think of genocide and millions and millions displaced. They remember the images of war and hunger and of hope for some Sudanese who  knew a day like today may be on the rise. It is not official, but Southern Sudan is on the first day of voting in a week-long independence referendum that may create the world's newest nation, about five years after the end of a civil war.

Teaming Up For Darfur

In the almost eight years of war in Darfur, continuous help and awareness has been brought to those displaced because of the genocide by an American Actor, George Clooney.

His charity "Not On Our Watch" has lobbied with the world, his Hollywood counterparts, the White House, Presidents and the U.N-- to keep the people of Sudan on their minds.

South Africa's Desmond Tutu Announces Retirement

On October 7th 2010, his 79th birthday South African anti-apartheid leader and Nobel Peace Prize winner Desmond Tutu will retire from public life.

His announcement came yesterday at St George's Cathedral in Cape Town, South Africa. "Instead of growing old gracefully with my family, reading and writing and praying and thinking, too much of my time has been spent at airports and in hotels."

PHOTOS: Nelson Mandela Celebrates 92nd Birthday

In my opinion, he is the only person who can inspire ANY  generation--going all the way back to  my grandmother  (whom by the way is 81 this year)

Mandela turned 92 yesterday and this year, unlike his 90 (huge celebration) he celebrated with his family. "Today is an opportunity for millions of people around the world to look inside themselves and find those beautiful qualities as any human being has and say: `I am able to make a difference to my neighbor, to someone underprivileged, I can extend my goodness to other people,'" Mandela's wife Graca Machel said Sunday. She said that while her husband was no longer so physically strong, "his spirit is strong as ever."
